It's funny how you find Kohelet connections in the randomest places. I'm babysitting, and the kids are watching the Smurfs, and there was an episode just now where Lazy takes a nap and dreams of Paradise.
In the episode, he is convinced to go to Paradise instead of gathering firewood like he should be doing, and a big blue Bacchus tells him to "have fun, for life is short." When they take advantage of all that, Bacchus starts trying to trap them to eat them. Maybe this is an indication of what the Neheneh life is really like? Maybe it seems all pretty and awesome and enjoyable, but underneath, once you start living it, it goes bad?
That would make sense... Once you start with one indulgence and then one more and one more, you're on a slippery slope that never stops. It comes to a point where there's never enough. We're never satisfied with what we have, no matter how MUCH we have.
I guess that's the hidden message in the Smurf episode: materialistic paradise might not be quite as lovely as we thought... Just a thought...

Bacchus and the Smurfy Neheneh

I find it truly wonderful that the principles mentioned and discussed in Kohelet echo all over the world. As we have found out, not many people have studied Kohelet. In fact, nearly no one has studied Kohelet in the same way that Mrs. Perl has taught it to us. Nonetheless, the basic lessons of Kohelet really ring with truth. I am fairly certain that all of us see Kohelet connections everywhere... and I mean EVERYWHERE. It would appear that Kohelet describes truly universal ideas. Once we finish the sefer, we will certainly (hopefully) be able to understand the bigger picture and how all of this fits in.
ReplyDeleteIt is so funny how in the most random places or times Kohelet is always involved. Maybe we have just trained our minds to realize Kohelet's philosophies in random places or maybe the philosophies have influenced writings of TV and other literature. Anyways, I really enjoyed how you found a way to connect Kohelet, such a heavy topic, to a humorous children's show.
ReplyDeleteI think this message is very true. We can all relate it to our lives: it's a slippery slope - once we become so obsessed with materialistic things it's hard for us to ever be satisfied with anything. It's seen everywhere -- even in the Smurfs!
ReplyDeleteKohelet does seem to be coming up everywhere! It really can relate to so much. This is a really good connection.
