Last week I watched an episode of New Girl and the whole time I was amazed at how much it related to what we were learning. For a second I was wondering if they had hidden cameras in our class. The way that it related was that Schmidt, one of the actors, was just concerned with himself, with only his accomplishments and failures. One day Schmidt had just came back from talking to the Rabbi and suddenly he saw a man fall off of his bike. This man was chewing gu while riding so he started choking. Schmidt saved this man, this part of him was just like the amal.
The next part he constantly wanted somebody to tell him that he was a good man. Schmidt asked everybody he knew to tell him that he was good. Nobody would tell him that because he just recently cheated on his girlfriend. He then just didn’t care anymore. Schmidt just gave up and said there was no point of being good or bad, we shouldn’t care. Life was just enjoyment, he didn’t care about feeling or anything.
Schmidt then started to realize that he was hurting and he kind of got tired of not living his life anymore. There was a moment of clarity for Schmidt, he didn’t want to be the guy that everybody resented to be around. He started to work and believe that everything was for the best and if he didn’t accomplish everything he ever wanted it would be okay. Kindness and caring turned into the biggest thing on his list. Everybody started to tell Schmidt that he was becoming a better man and they wanted to be around him more, this chapter in his life is just like the Yirei Elokim.
