In class this week we saw a new view that Kohelet took on life. He starts off by saying G-d is in control of everything. He made a time for us to celebrate everything and even time to be sad. G-d is in control. It seems like he's finally having an epiphany. G-d is involved, He is there for us and He controls us and everything. Sounds good.
There were three different sides to the things he now saw.
There was the Amel: Everything is from G-d. Good person will be rewarded and the sinner will be
punished. Man should enjoy the world-> eat, drink, and be merry.
Then there was the Chacham: There is a time for every action and emotion. Some men try to understand the world, but they can't. Man's goal is to eat, drink, work, do good-recognize everything comes from G-d.
Kohelet realizes that everything is from G-d and he is responsible for his actions good or bad. There is no justification. If man has no responsibility, then man is no different than animals. That in the end we all have the same fate-death, coming to the conclusion again that Hakol Hevel. Therefore, the only thing that man can do it rejoice-party.
I connect this very much to the popular song "We Can't Stop" by Miley Cyrus. In her song she talks about a party and it doesn't matter what you do, because only G-d is judging you. She says that everyone should just party and it doesn't matter what you do, everyone should just party all the time and do what they want. Some of her lyrics are:
Remember only God can judge you
It’s our party we can do what we want
It’s our party we can say what we want
Doing whatever we want
This shows that even after all this time, there are still so many people who really believe that all we should do is party, and that basically life doesn't have a meaning so party all the time. I find it very sad. What are your thoughts?
