Why can't Shlomo just create his own philosophy?

As we have been discussing Shlomo and how he is continuously bashing down idealogy after idealogy, I was struck with a question: Why in the world doesn't Shlomo just create his own philosophy on life? We see how everything is just not working out for him, and as he sees the flaws in each different way of thinking, he goes on to consider the whole thing totally hevel, and the process ends up repeating itself indefinitely. Hello, earth to Shlomo! Who said you can't make up your own philosophy that works for you? We know that Shlomo is rather picky; what works for anyone else will most likely not work for him. So why is he trying to fit in with idealogies made for different types of people? There are different aspects within each that Shlomo sees the sense in. If he just compiled these points together, it would make a unique, fitting, and meaningful lifestyle tailored specifically to his needs. Why did no one ever think of this before? Shlomo, you were the smartest and most influential man ever! Did this idea never cross your mind? Shlomo's needs were nothing like any other person's, so how come he thought that he could blend into a lifestyle intended for a totally different type of person? This is just like trying to wear a different size pair of shoes or clothing; try as you might, it will simply never fit as it is intended to, because it is not made to fit you. The same goes for Shlomo. He was trying to squeeze into something that would never fit him, and I think he realized this. Now, if you know the shoe won't fit, why try to shove it on anyway? What was Shlomo getting at? Did he, perhaps, have some deep desire to bland in like everyone else? Did all his extraordinary gifts affect him in more ways than it is commonly thought? Is this situation at all comparable to a very tall person trying desperate to fit into tiny clothes because "everyone else is wearing them," even though this person would be blatantly ignoring the fact that this is impossible? Why would the very tall person want to be tiny instead of embracing their large height advantages? I have plenty of questions from this topic, so feel free to share your ideas in the comments below!

  1. Emma,

Nice blog post. I think that your question also relates to Shlomo's pursuit of perfection. If he knew he couldn't achieve perfection, why was he so intent on finding it? Also, maybe Shlomo is only merely trying out these "shoes" you mentioned. They clearly don't seem to fit, but he's trying. He's learning from his mistakes, and is formulating his own philosophy, which will hopefully be revealed in the near future.
